Dating in your 60s: Insights from the 60+Club singles survey
Dating in your 60s and beyond can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own unique challenges. To get a better understanding of how over-60s feel about dating, the 60+Club conducted a comprehensive survey with more than 500 participants. Below is a summary of the survey findings that may help guide singles in their 60s who are actively dating. The second part of this article offers several insights and recommendations for those actively looking to meet a partner in their older years.
Whether you’re enjoying the dating scene or feeling uncertain, these insights may provide some perspective.
Who Took the Survey?
The survey was completed by a range of individuals aged 60 and over:
- Age range: 58% were between the ages of 60-70, with a smaller portion (31%) aged between 71-80.
- Gender split: 61% were male, and 39% were female.
Most respondents were either retired (68%) or still working part-time (14%).
Current Relationship Status
A key takeaway from the survey is that many in the over-60 crowd are actively exploring relationships:
- Single: 40% identified as single.
- Divorced or widowed: Nearly 44% were either divorced or widowed.
- Dating casually: About 2% were dating someone but not exclusively.
These findings show that the over-60 age group is still keen on finding meaningful connections.
Dating Frequency and Success
The survey explored how often respondents were going on first dates:
- 42% said they hadn’t gone on any first dates in the past 12 months.
- 42% had been on between 1 and 3 dates during that period.
However, for many, those first dates did not always lead to a second date. Only 43% indicated that their first dates often led to follow-up meetings.
Enjoyment of Dating in Later Life
Despite some challenges, a significant number of over-60s are enjoying the dating scene:
- 20% said they love dating at this stage of life.
- Another 30% rated their dating experience as “okay.”
- 36% described their past dating experiences as either positive or mostly positive, though a larger percentage (50%) noted a mix of both positive and negative experiences.
Common Dating Challenges
The survey shed light on the frustrations that many over-60s face when dating:
- Inauthenticity: A recurring complaint was people being inauthentic.
- Unrealistic expectations: 25% of respondents felt their dates had unrealistic expectations.
- Poor communication: A significant number of participants (29%) reported communication issues as a challenge in their dating experiences.
- Lack of chemistry: Nearly 38% said the absence of chemistry was a key reason for negative dating experiences.
What Qualities Are Most Important?
When asked about the qualities they most value in a potential partner, participants revealed that emotional traits were much more important than superficial ones. The most important traits included:
- Honesty: 75% of participants listed this as a top trait.
- Kindness: 67% valued kindness in a partner.
- Trustworthiness: 55% prioritized this.
- Sense of humor: 54% said a good sense of humor is crucial. Interestingly, only 39% listed physical attractiveness as a top priority.
Dating Goals
For over-60s, dating isn’t just about finding romance; it’s about companionship and connection:
- Companionship: Over 63% sought companionship.
- Romantic relationship: 60% were looking for romance.
- Fun and enjoyment: Over half (56%) of the respondents said that having fun was a key goal.
- Long-term commitment: 48% expressed interest in a long-term relationship.
Meeting People Outside of Dating Apps
While online dating is increasingly common among seniors (78% had tried a dating app), many still meet potential partners through more traditional avenues. The most popular ways to meet people include:
- Social events and meetups (36%)
- Friends’ social circles (43%)
- Volunteering (24%)
- Lifestyle or retirement villages (10%)
Use of Online Dating Sites
Online dating has become a viable option for many seniors:
- 78% of respondents had used an online dating app at least once.
- The most popular platforms included SeniorMatch, OurTime, and Plenty of Fish.
- 53% said they were no longer using dating apps, citing reasons such as privacy concerns, lack of time, and too many bad first dates.
Despite these challenges, many seniors remain optimistic about online dating, with 50% of those surveyed still active on dating apps.
Family and Friends’ Influence
Family and friends have surprisingly little influence on seniors’ dating lives. A striking 72% said their families had no influence on their dating decisions. Similarly, 63% reported that friends did not play a significant role in their romantic choices.
Preferred Distance When Dating
The survey found that location matters when looking for a partner:
- 19% said they preferred to meet someone within 10km of their home.
- Another 36% were comfortable traveling up to 50km for the right person.
- 18% were even open to dating someone interstate, provided they were compatible.
Conclusion: Dating at 60 and Beyond
The findings of the 60+Club survey show that dating in later life can be fulfilling, with many over-60s actively seeking connection, companionship, and even long-term commitment. While there are challenges—such as poor communication and mismatched expectations—the desire to find meaningful relationships remains strong among this age group. Whether through dating apps or social events, many are continuing to explore their romantic options, proving that love and companionship have no age limit.
This article provides a snapshot of the over-60 dating landscape, offering both encouragement and insight for those currently navigating the dating scene. Remember, the journey may have its ups and downs, but it’s never too late to find the connection you’re looking for.
Total number of respondents at the time of article publication was at 518.
